The Films I Liked the Most Between 2000-10

I devour on movies. Some real good movies came in the last decade and many I must have missed too. Of the ones I saw here are a few that I find deserve a mention here.

1. Udaan :- Unseen before this great movie of true aspiration, fight and resurgence is a treat. It never defeats the bright understanding of its audience. Some great acting by the little known actors otherwise. Special mention to the scenes where the actor steals his fathers car and takes spinning ride with drunk friends. A scene where he hits his own fathers car with iron rod as to protest. The perfect angst shown by Rajat Barmecha in his role and man of steel his father Ronit Roy must be the best casting of the decade for the role. Rajat Bermecha is the real flag bearer of the dialogue "fata poster nikla hero...". The Casting Director must be applauded for his/her understanding and his/her appropriate selection for assignment of roles. Not many would ever get into this domain of film making ever, you will realize once you see this movie. This is a true coming of age movie for Indian Cinema. Outstanding Movie.

2. Maqbool :- No other movie of this decade had all the top actors of industry bound in 150 minute saga than Maqbool. Just going by the battery of actors one can envisage the kind of magic a motion picture can create. Maqbool did justice to each one of them. Pankaj Kapoor - Indian Marlon Brando, Nasserruddin Shah - Indian Al Pacino, Om Puri - Indian Robert De Niro, Irfan Khan, Tabbu and Piyush Mishra; all pulled in one movie and script did sufficient justice to each maestro. Watch the scene where Pankaj Kapoor makes a local politician eat Pan and says "Guleri khaya karo gulfam zuban kabu mein rahegi..." His eyes commit cold blooded murder. Salute to Vishal Bharadwaj for a commendable effort he had put in.

3. Lakshay :- A spectacle, both from Farhan Akhtar and Hritik Roshan. Matchless war movie, this could only stand next to Haqeeqat from Chetan Anand. The marvel was the way they shot the song "Kitni Batein Yaad Ati Hai..." shot in a small bunker, so vivid a setup and so well acted by Hritik and Preety although all had to be said with little facial expressions.

4. Dev D :- No other Devdas stands close to this Anurag Kashyap special. I would always be bewildered how could someone pull of 18 songs in a single movie without the notice of audience and still make a movie that works for the maximum length of it. To best of my memory, Its the only movie that got 5 star rating from maximum number of film critics and journalists alike. It is a movie that nobody had the courage to make before and no one can repeat this ever after. I will never forget how hypocrite couples left the theater within 15 mins into the movie, as if sex did not exist on planet earth and they themselves were from Pluto. The dance sequence of song "Pardesi..." was easily the best choreography of the decade. There were in numerous memorable scenes in the movie that were true to the compulsions of human nature and behavior. Like the leading lady carrying the mattress to sugarcane field for copulation and when the same lady returns to Dev's home and washes his dirty clothes, thus later showing him his real worth with her power of existence above that of Dev's. Above all the contribution of Anurag Kashyap and Abhay Deol make this movie a standout of all of other movies made. I have always felt that Heer-Ranjha (Rajkumar and Priya Rajwansh as actors) could never be made again in Indian cinema, watch it once and you will realize what I mean; The same is the case with Dev D, it can never be touched and made again.

5. Lucky Oye :- Andaz Apna Apna of the decade. Mad house, mad creations and desi punjabi style madness allover the place. True Saddi Dilli movie. The red carpet roads of Tilak nagar and Rajouri garden must never ever be taken names without this extravagant chutzpah from little Sikh boys riding stolen bikes taking girls out on a date to a restaurant in sub-urban Punjabi heartland within Dilli. Dialogues were the biggest star for this flawless movie. Its a maniac movie. Great star cast, great direction, great music totally in sync with the taste of butter chicken and murg tanduri. Like Veeru and Jai, Lucky and Bangali will be inseparable for ages to come.

6. Bheja Fry :- One room movie. Most irritating baffle of sequences. Vinay Pathak carried burden of a lost aspired upbringing with his razor sharp timing and child like smile with hilt to cut others to size. Foolish rendezvous of unknown people and their serendipity created mischievous concoction of events. This well lit collage deserves a lot of appreciation for the effort by the team. Asif Merchant (Ranvir Shorie) dialogue "Salma agar tumhari saheli ke bachche ki b'day party khatam ho gai ho toh ghar wapas a jao..." is the kohinoor of this crown. :P
